A Heartland Community Gesture of Appreciation and Support

Heartland Ministries Australia marked a warm and longawaited milestone on Saturday 28 February, hosting its first BBQ breakfast for Wollongong Police Station’s morning shift in eight years.

Tim Hall, a long-time Operations Officer with the RFS and volunteer chaplain now endorsed and credentialed with Heartland Ministries, initiated the re-connect as part of the ‘Presence’ Police Support Group breakfasts that he’s facilitated at Lake Illawarra Police Station since 2018. The earlymorning cookup brought together a small volunteer team — Kaz and Graeme Hush with Joanne and Joe Zohar—who set things up under a green canopy outside the station and worked the grills with good humour and plenty of teamwork.

With trays, tongs and gloves at the ready, the group prepared a hearty spread that filled the courtyard with the unmistakable aroma of a classic Aussie breakfast.

Around a dozen officers from the morning shift stopped by to share a meal, enjoy a moment of positive community engagement and relaxation, and to start their day with something a little brighter than the usual routine.

For Heartland Ministries, the event represents more than a meal—it is a gesture of appreciation, care and community support, reaffirming their commitment to the wellbeing of local frontline workers. The smiles, conversations and relaxed atmosphere captured in the images reflect a simple but meaningful act of service, one that Wollongong  Police have invited Heartland Ministries to continue at regular time intervals moving forward.
